Our Services

Catherine and Mark have been life partners for more than 30 years. We provide both separate and coordinated support to clients through all the difficulties (and opportunities!) that life can present. Our roles (read below to understand the difference between therapy and coaching) are different, but we share an unwavering commitment to the practice of our craft and a mission for your wellness and success. We bring the highest standards of ethics and excellence, the power of evidence-based approaches, and a powerful toolbox of skills, and we are so excited to work with you!

We are committed to creating an inclusive and affirming space that celebrates and supports the LGBTQ+ community and BIPOC individuals

Psychotherapy is for those experiencing more serious mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, or relationship issues. Catherine brings an eclectic approach, offering multiple modalities that are tailored to individual needs and goals. Clients may need a short-term solution-focused approach that targets an immediate challenge, or they may want to embark on a longer-term journey of healing, self-discovery and growth.

Psychotherapy is rooted in the understanding that our memories, childhood experiences, thoughts, feelings, in-born temperament, behaviors, neurobiology and somatic experiences are interconnected. By addressing these in a therapeutic context, clients can gain insight, self-awareness, healing, confidence, skills, agency and increased capacity and connection in their lives. It’s not just for moments of crisis—it’s also for those who want to proactively invest in their well-being and personal development. Catherine uses evidence-based modalities that include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

  • Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS)

  • Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT)

  • Narrative Therapy

  • Psychodynamic Therapy

  • Solution-Focused Therapy

  • Sandplay Therapy

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

  • Non-violent Communication

  • Restorative Practice

  • Mindfulness

  • Family Therapy

  • Couples Therapy

Psychotherapy for treatment for medically recognized diagnoses is covered by most health insurance, and while Catherine does not accept insurance for services, she provides "superbills" which clients submit to their carriers for reimbursement for out-of-network services. Out-of-network reimbursement coverage and rates vary. Catherine offers a sliding scale for those in need, and members of the BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities. She provides good-faith estimates for costs of services in compliance with the 2022 No Surprises Act, which was created to protect people from surprise medical fees/costs.

Coaching is a forward-focused, goal-oriented process designed to help individuals unlock their potential, overcome obstacles, and achieve their personal or professional aspirations. While psychotherapy includes or references past experiences and treats issues of trauma, emotional distress or relational conflict, coaching focuses on present experience and actionable steps for meaningful change. Coaching sessions are collaborative and dynamic, focusing on empowerment, self-awareness, and accountability.

Unlike psychotherapy, coaching is not aimed at diagnosing or treating mental health conditions. Instead, it’s for individuals who are ready to enhance their performance, build resilience, or navigate specific challenges. Coaching, when it is rooted in evidence-based approaches, is helpful for those wanting to live with more intention, ease and purpose and for professionals aiming to sharpen their decision-making and leadership abilities.

Another key distinction between psychotherapy and coaching lies in their approach: psychotherapy often explores the “why” behind your thoughts and behaviors, while coaching focuses on the “how”—the concrete actions you can take to move forward. For example, coaching might help you build daily habits to reduce stress, develop confidence in public speaking, or foster stronger relationships at work or home.

With personalized strategies (including some listed below) and an emphasis on your unique strengths, coaching empowers you to create lasting change and thrive in all areas of life.

  • Mindfulness

  • Self-Compassion

  • Self-discovery, re-discovery

  • Leadership/management training

  • Entrepreneurship

  • Community-building, social engagement

  • Resilience-building

  • Time Management, organization

  • Sparking Creativity

  • Productivity

  • Communication skills (personal/professional)

Coaching is not covered by insurance. Mark offers a sliding scale for those in need, and members of the BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities.

We offer educational and experiential workshops designed to help participants become more effective authors of their own lives, at home and at work.

While the office may feel like a very different environment than the dinner table, the skills that support happiness and success in both contexts are remarkably similar. Emotional regulation, empathy, deep listening, and a measured degree of control are the secrets to better communication, collaboration, and growth with your children, your life partner, or your work colleagues. With our combined experience and training in parenting, relationships, leadership, and career growth, we offer transformative experiences to businesses and individuals that will open you to possibility in every part of your life.

We also offer peer support groups that foster connection, mutual understanding and group/individual empowerment. Many people at our current time in political and cultural history are feeling afraid, alone and discouraged, and we offer facilitated, guided conversations over zoom and in our home office in NE Portland. Social support groups are NOT therapy and are not appropriate for those who are struggling with mental health or addiction.
